ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Shehbaz Sharif became prime minister of Pakistan Monday through a vote in Parliament, inheriting a highly polarized political situation and a deteriorating economy.
Mr. Sharif, 70, is getting his first chance at the top job after years of being the junior political partner to his older brother, Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister who is considered a charismatic leader. The younger Mr. Sharif, who is seen as a capable administrator, ran their home province of Punjab under his brother’s previous governments.
The local stock market and Pakistani rupee both rallied Monday, as markets welcomed the lifting of some of the uncertainty over the country’s future government.
