TAIPEI—Shanghai announced a fresh round of mass testing for its 25 million residents as health authorities recorded another new daily record number of infections and the U.S. State Department allowed its diplomats in the city to depart.
Shanghai, the financial hub hardest-hit by China’s worst outbreak since the coronavirus first emerged in Wuhan more than two years ago, reported on Saturday more than 23,000 new locally-transmitted cases for the prior day, the eighth straight day of record highs. As has been the case throughout the latest outbreak, almost all of the new cases were reported as asymptomatic.
Shanghai accounted for the bulk of China’s more than 25,000 new domestic infections reported on Saturday, as the city prepared to open a cavernous exhibition center, capable of housing 50,000 people, to serve as a makeshift hospital.
