HONG KONG—One of China’s most experienced commercial pilots was seated in the cockpit of the China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 that departed the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming just after 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Next to him was a much younger pilot with a promising pedigree.
The careers and lives of both men, along with those of 130 other passengers and crew, are widely feared to have come to an abrupt end roughly an hour later, after their aircraft suddenly hurtled toward the earth and crashed.
